Lynch Evaluating Hoosiers in Scrimmage

With the 2010 season opener against Towson less than two weeks away, Indiana University head football coach Bill Lynch wanted to get a look at some of his younger players in the scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

“We made it an emphasis on giving the young kids a lot of reps. I think in years past maybe we hadn’t found out enough about them in camp.  We saw some of them really show themselves today which is really good on both sides of the ball,” Coach Lynch told the media after the scrimmage.

As the 2010 campaign approaches, Lynch also stressed the need to finalize the team’s depth chart. “After this scrimmage, generally is when you start sitting down with your staff and start making decisions about your depth chart.  That’s when you start getting anxious about making preparations for the first game.”

Coach Lynch also plans to give his players some much-needed rest before finishing out camp and preparing for the season opener at Memorial Stadium on Thursday September 2.

Other notes:

-- Lynch likes the depth he has at the cornerback position heading into the season. “I’ll tell you what, we’ve got some guys now. It was good to see (Matt) Eanrest make some tackles… (Andre) Kates and (Lenyatta) Kiles are both good players, (Richard) Council has had his best camp by far, Adrian Burks has been solid. So we’ve got some there.”

-- Redshirt Junior Safety Chris Adkins had to be helped off the field due to an ankle injury. The diagnosis and his status are unknown at this time.

--Dusty Kiel looks like the favorite right now for the position of starting quarterback Ben Chapell’s backup over Edward Baker-Wright. Kiel was solid during Saturday’s scrimmage, tossing a couple touchdown passes. The team seemed to be running a lot of screens with Baker-Wright at the helm.

--True freshman Kofi Hughes recovered an offensive teammate’s fumble in mid-air and took it 95-plus yards for the score in the scrimmage.
